Sustainability Management for Cultural Institutions: From ESG Strategy to Measurable Impact
Cultural organisations are increasingly expected to demonstrate how they address environmental, social and governance responsibilities. Museums, theatres, festivals, foundations and heritage organisations must now translate sustainability commitments into practical strategies, measurable indicators and credible reporting.
The Sustainability Manager and Strategist for Cultural Institutions programme is an intensive, English-language course designed for cultural managers, curators, fundraisers, students and independent professionals. It combines three weeks of live online learning with an optional one-week practical residency in Santa Sofia, Italy.
A central component of the programme is the creation of a professional Sustainability Portfolio based on a real cultural institution. Participants who already work for an organisation may use their own institution as the case study, while independent participants can work with a case assigned by the programme.
The portfolio covers several important areas:
- organisational sustainability analysis;
- stakeholder identification and engagement;
- application of ESG frameworks;
- impact assessment and measurement tools;
- development of a sustainability strategy;
- definition of key performance indicators;
- sustainability communication;
- sustainable fundraising and sponsorship planning.
The residential component takes place in Santa Sofia, near the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. During this week, participants apply their knowledge within a cultural ecosystem that includes a contemporary art gallery, a theatre, heritage sites, festivals and local development initiatives.
The residency concludes with the International Forum on the Sustainability of Culture, where participants can exchange ideas with cultural professionals, researchers, public administrators and sustainability specialists from different countries.
Participants completing the entire course receive the Professional Certificate in Sustainability Management and Strategy for Cultural Institutions. Those completing only the online section may receive the First Level Certificate in Sustainability Management for Cultural Institutions.
Depending on the certification level, graduates should be able to develop sustainability plans, establish ESG indicators and reporting systems, coordinate stakeholder engagement, prepare sustainable funding strategies and assist cultural organisations with sustainability assessments and audits.
The programme is coordinated by sustainability and ESG specialist Martin Neureiter and includes contributions from professionals associated with organisations such as MoMA, Julie’s Bicycle, TBA21 and the Climate Gallery Coalition.
The full hybrid programme costs €1,850, with an Early Bird price of €1,450 until 15 July 2026. Online-only participation costs €850, reduced to €650 during the Early Bird period. Places for the residential week are limited.
